Private archives are archives created in the private sector. But the private sector encompasses many things, so the term "private archive" refers to a rather heterogeneous group of archives with significant internal differences, both in terms of origin, extent and structure.
Hence, it is practical to classify the private archives into different categories by their creators.
While the National Archives of Norway's primary responsibility is the public archives, we also have a clear obligation with regard to private archives of significance to our shared history and national sense of self. This obligation is expressed in the Archives Act and the Director General's guidelines for work with private archives, among other places.
