Last year, the website mobilen.no asked their readers about their ”dream apps”. One of the awarded suggestions was a search tool for Norwegian genealogists. With the app ”Digitalarkivet”, the dream has come true. It is available for downloading through AppStore, Google Play and Windows Marketplace. The solution makes it possible for all those with a smart phone or tablet to search for relatives born before 1910.

– The website Digitalarkivet  has proven to be a very popular service, with an average of more than 10.000 unique users every day and almost 1 million views per day. Consequently, we wanted to make this service available for our users via new channels, says Ole Gausdal, department head in the National Archives of Norway. – By combining new technology and historical data we have managed to lift a popular service on to new mobile platforms, and thus hope to reach old and new users on the media they are using at the time. We are also very happy that the app is supported by three of the largest operative systems for mobile units, says Gausdal.

With the app you can search for persons by a simple or advanced name search. From the hit list you can click further to see detailed information about the persons. Digitalarkivet’s data bases contain more than 5 million persons from censuses and church books, and in the course of the summer another 5 million will be added.

With the Norwegian edition of the tv series “Who do you think you are” on national television, the traffic to the various services offered Digitalarkivet increased significantly, and the record is more than 3 million downloaded pages in the course of 24 hours. There is another season planned, and the National Archives expect an new growth in the genealogy interest.
