As a public agency, the National Archives are subjected to the Norwegian Freedom of Information Act. That means that everybody can request access to many of the documents that are created as a result of the contact we have with the public. But that does not mean that everything is freely accessible or is published on the internet. Information that is confidential by law or legislation is always protected so that only those who are involved in the request will see them. Several of the ways in which you can reach us represent a potential danger of unauthorized persons accessing the information. Consequently you should only send sensitive information as a sealed postal item.
You can communicate with the National Archives via e-mail, but remember that this is not a secure channel. In an e-mail you should not write anything that you do not want unauthorized persons to see. E-mails are treated like other documents, meaning that if there is an inquiry you want us to process it will be logged and saved in our electronic journal and archive system. Our journal is part of the official electronic post journal that is accessible on the internet, but searches via search engines will not give any hits on names that are registered in this journal.

When searching our home pages, the IP address on the computer that is used is registered. You can also send us a personal request via a form on the home page. Such requests are treated the same way as e-mails, and likewise you should consider what kind of information you submit in an unsafe manner like this.
When you order products from the web shop, you must register in order for us to send the goods and the bill. The information is saved in our costumer register for 10 years.

You can request services via arkivportalen.no. In order for us to give you what you want, we must know who you are. The information you submit about yourself, is only used to make sure that you get the services you request, possibly to give you other feedback. When the task is done, the information is deleted from this system, but it can be transferred to other systems.
If the request concerns archival material for use in the reading room, the request will be transferred to our internal request system and kept there for up to 10 years.
If your request involves sending you a piece of information, or a service that we are charging you for, the information will be transferred to our regular journal and processing system, possibly also to our accounting system. Here the information will be kept. In that case it means that others can find out that you have approached the National Archives and what you have requested, unless it is confidential information.
Arkivportalen uses Google Analytics as a statistical tool.
With regular use of digitalarkivet.no you do not submit information about yourself, but the system administrator can be able to see the IP address for the computer that is used.
The Digital Archives use Piwik web analytics and we keep all the data ourselves.
If you want to take part in discussions on forum.arkivverket.no, you must submit information about yourself so that the people who are responsible for the services can see who you are. Your name will also be published together with your discussion post. Please note that that this will lead to your name being available on internet search engines.
There is no set limit for how long the posts can be accessible.
