World War II

The years of the occupation were eventful in many ways. On these pages you can read articles, look at photos and get tips on what archives are available.

We have many small and large archives from WWII in the National Archives. Often it is difficult to know what kind of documentation you can find in the different archives, and therefore we have made thematic entries to the archives.

Each of the themes contain between five and ten articles and some photographs or illustrations. In addition, there are several links to other internet resources and to relevant articles in Arkivportalen.no. This should make it possible to find the most central archives from WWII.

During the Second World War, approximately 40 000 people were arrested or detained by the Germans or the NS authorities. Some of them were released after a short period of time, but tens of thousands spent up to several years in variuos kinds of prisons and camps.
